Getting a job in a week comes down to three things: apply to the right roles, apply early, and make it easy for a recruiter to say yes. Here's the plan we built Job In A Week around, one day at a time.
Day 1: Pick one target role and city
Recruiters move fastest on candidates who clearly fit. Choose the one role you're most qualified for right now, and one or two cities (or remote).
- Write your target title the way companies write it, e.g. "Data analyst" not "analytics enthusiast".
- List the 8–10 skills that appear in most postings for that role.
- Check what the role pays so you can answer salary questions with confidence.
Day 2: Fix your resume in one sitting
One page for freshers, two at most for experienced people. Every bullet should say what you did and what changed because of it, with a number where you can.
- Import your LinkedIn so you don't retype anything.
- Put the skills from Day 1 near the top, in the same words the postings use.
- Use a clean, ATS-readable design: real text, no tables of images.
Day 3: Find openings posted in the last 24–72 hours
The first few days after a job goes live are when recruiters read most applications. Old postings are often already in interviews.
- Filter jobs to the last 24 hours or 3 days.
- Prefer company careers pages over reposts: your application lands directly in their system.
- Shortlist 15–25 roles that match at least 70% of the requirements.
Day 4: Apply early, and tailor every application
Ten tailored applications beat a hundred generic ones. Change your headline and top three bullets to mirror each posting.
- Apply to your top 10–15 roles today.
- Keep a simple tracker: company, role, date applied, contact.
- Use the exact job title from the posting in your resume headline.
Day 5: Reach a real person at each company
A short note to the hiring manager or a recruiter at the company doubles your chances of a reply.
- Find the recruiter or team lead on LinkedIn.
- Send three lines: the role, why you fit (one proof point), and a thank-you.
- Ask friends and alumni for referrals at your shortlisted companies.
Day 6: Prepare for the interviews you'll get
Most first rounds ask the same things: tell me about yourself, why this company, a project you're proud of, and role basics.
- Write a 60-second introduction and say it out loud.
- Prepare three STAR stories (situation, task, action, result).
- Revise the core skills from Day 1: SQL, case frameworks, system design or whatever your role needs.
Day 7: Follow up and keep the pipeline full
Offers in a week come from momentum. Follow up politely on day-3 applications and add new postings that went live since.
- Follow up on applications from Day 3–4 with one line.
- Apply to fresh postings from the last 24 hours.
- Turn on daily match emails so new fits reach you first.
